Tameside Rabbit and Guinea Pig Rescue came into being due to the large number of requests from owners in Tameside asking us to find new homes for their unwanted rabbits and guinea pigs.

In 2002 after many years of breeding these small animals as family pets my parents and I decided to stop completely and concentrate on trying to make a better life for as many as we could.

We accept referrals from local people and organisations and take in rabbits, guinea pigs and occasionally chinchillas and hamsters, care for them and try to find new homes.

Some come to us who are very poorly and, with the help of a local veterinary surgery, they are nursed back to health before they can be rehomed.

If you would like to offer a home and want to find out more please go to the adoption page

Education

In order to improve rabbit and guinea pig welfare in the Tameside area, one of our local veterinary surgeons visits schools to talk to children about the importance of caring properly for these small animals.  Snow White (below) often goes along with them, as she is very gentle and loves attention.  She is a British Giant who weighs about 24lb and, although she is a permanent resident with the rescue and not looking for a new home, she enjoys meeting all our visitors.

Snow White &

Tilly

Tilly is a resident Herman's Tortoise who is now 14 months old.  Tilly goes with Snow White and our local veterinary surgeon to visit schools where she helps to educate children about caring for animals.  In the near future she will be getting a new friend to live with her.  Tortoises are exotic pets and they need lots of time and knowledge to lead happy and healthy lives.  Veterinary care, if needed, can be very expensive as they should be seen by veterinary surgeons who are experienced in the treatment of exotic species.
